“Mama Mia, here we go again. My, my, how can I resist ya?” Classic song lyrics. If you don’t know what that line is from, well my friend, you have been living under a rock. On July 20, of this year the newest Mama Mia! movie came out. There has been quite a lot of reviews for this movie. Some good, and some–well, they could have been nicer. I decided to give my own review of this movie after seeing it yesterday. So, let’s start shall we?
In Mama Mia! Here we go again it takes the audience on an amazing journey of what Donna’s life was like and how similar it is to her daughter Sophie–just in different time lines. It shows us all of the wonderful places Donna visited and of course, the guys she fell in love with. This is, in a nutshell, a mother-daughter movie. It takes on a sense of finding your place in the world and leaves you with the feeling that just like Donna and Sophie, you can make your wildest dreams come true. Not to mention, the main setting of this movie is in Greece. Can’t get any better than that!
Where do I even begin with the music? I’m usually a person who doesn’t exactly enjoy movies where characters break out into song, but this movie could very well change my mind on that. Each song told a story, a story of how the characters feel and how they react to the current situation.
I loved how each song, even if it was slow, it made me feel like I wanted to sing along with the characters. Even after I left the theater, I caught myself humming some of the songs from the movie. It really drew me with the music, it didn’t feel unnecessary at all. Each and every song felt relevant to what was happening and it served to bring you closer to the characters even more.
For this movie, I could only find one downside to it. The ending feels very sped up and left me wondering about a couple things. (I won’t discuss that here in this article for the sake of not spoiling anything.) Granted, it still is a musical and like any other musical the ending will be fast paced, but still. Alas, we can’t have everything we want especially when it comes to movies. Other than that though, this movie was fantastic in my opinion. Which brings me to the reviews final score…*drum roll please*
For Mama Mia! Here we go again I give this movie nine out of ten potions. It would have gotten ten, but because of some plot holes and a rather speedy ending, it gets nine. I highly recommend going to see this movie though. Especially if you are in the mood for an adorable rom-com/musical.
